Mark 6:7-12

“7. And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; 8. And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: 9. But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. 10. And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. 11. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgement, than for that city. 12. And they went out, and preached that men should repent.”

Can you imagine being put to this kind of test? A familiar verse of scripture is found in Matthew 19:26 “…but with God all things are possible.” Notice how the scripture uses the word possible, rather than the word easy! Faith makes things possible, it doesn’t make them easy. Here the disciples are being put to the test to see how much they truly serve the Lord. What does it take for you to stop serving God? What are your possessions of this world? Is it hunting gear? Pickup trucks? Hunting? Diamond rings? Luke 14:33 “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” The disciples have to step out by faith, no food, no scrip(small bag or wallet), no money. How much do you truly love the Lord? What if God called you into full time ministry? Could you do it? Would you do it? What if you had to quit hunting or even just skip it for a few years? Would you give it to the Lord and just simply trust Him? Faith makes things possible, not easy! But remember one thing, life is not about us, it about eternity! Lost souls! The disciples had to step out by faith with nothing, and then trust that God would take care of them. Talk about tough! What did they have to do? Die to themselves and realize this world is all about Jesus! Luke 14:27 “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.” The only way to bear your own cross is to die to yourself! Can you do that to serve God? Notice also, there will be rejection when you serve the Lord, vs 11 “And whosoever shall not receive you…shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them.” There are a lot of believers that never see the blessings of God because fear and even common sense keeps them from serving God. What we think to be common sense is not always commons sense to God! God likes to do big and amazing things in our lives, but if we don’t trust Him by faith, we will never be used of Him. Remember that our common sense is from a sinful standpoint and God is perfect! God took care of his disciples! They made such an impact in history that we are still reading about them today! They helped change the world for Jesus Christ! What will people remember about you? Are you prideful? Are you consumed in hunting, trucks, or money? If God led you to sell all your things so you could be better used of Him, would you? What does God want for your life? Would you be willing to give up everything? If you answer no to that question, do you truly love the Lord? God can do great things in your life, but you must lose sight on everything of this world. I John 2:15-16 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

I John 2:15-16

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

I Corinthians 15:57-58

“57. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 28. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

Why are some hunters so unsuccessful? The Bible tells us in Proverbs 12:27 “The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.” The focus today in not necessarily the slothful, but more the diligent man. To some hunters they get toward the end of season and they quit early because they cant find success. To others, they start out hunting their first year or two and never find success, so they hang it up and never hunt again. Regardless of what animal you may hunt, it definitely takes time and diligence to learn about that animal. A new hunter or inexperienced hunter may compare themselves to a friend that is an avid hunter and expect hunting to be simple. All it takes to kill a deer is to sit in the woods and wait for him to come by, right! Its not that easy! I’ve been hunting for 25 years and I’m still learning! I still get frustrated! I still get weary, but the last thing I will do is quit. That’s the worst decision I could make! Now hunters may need to quit for a while because its a god to them, but that’s for a different devotion. How is your walk with God? What does it take for you to quit? Is there a particular situation that would hinder you from serving God? Give attention back to verse 58; Notice how the verse starts out, “Therefore”. Any time we see this word in the Bible we need to back up and see what therefore is referring to. Vs 57 says, God gives us our victory through Jesus Christ. I don’t know what you are dealing with today, but the Bible says if your saved, you have the victory! As a result of being saved we need to always trust God to take care of our stresses and struggles of life. Though Paul is writing to the church at Corinth we know that the letter is also to us, as believers. Look at what God is telling us to do as born again believers, “be ye stedfast”, that means to be firm; firmly fixed or established. Next He says “unmoveable”, that would mean, cannot be moved or shaken; firm; fixed. He also says, “always abounding in the work of the Lord”. Are you standing on the Word of God today? Are you soulwinning? Are you faithful in church? Are you trying to love your enemies? You cant do any of these things without Jesus Christ. I Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” The devil wants to stop your work and labor for Jesus Christ. Don’t quit! The Lord tells us, “your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” A hunter that quits because of frustration will never see success! Don’t expect God to move in your life if you quit serving Him! Life is tough, but the Word of God is perfect and He will never fail us! Keep fighting the fight! Keep moving forward! Always make sure your stand is biblical and the way God is leading you! Are you stedfast? Are you unmoveable? Are you always abounding in the work of the Lord? Only you can answer that question!

I Corinthians 15:58

Job 16:1-5

“1. THEN Job answered and said, 2. I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all. 3. Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest? I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake my head at you. 5. But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief.”

Here we find Job in a very difficult trial in his life. His three friends come to comfort him through his pain, but as they begin to speak it was nothing more than chastisement and correction. When you read the Book of Job, you will come to find that Job was not being chastised, he was going through a trial. Look at what Job 1:1 says about him, “…and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.” Sometimes God allows trials in the life of a believer to strengthen their walk with Him. The last thing they need is another believer try and figure out why they are going through it. Look at how Job felt, He had been in sever pain from the boils that consumed his body; Verse 1 says “…miserable comforters are ye all.” How do you treat other people when you see difficulties in their life? What kind of thoughts go through your mind about them? A simple example could be a hunter that makes a bad shot on a deer. The last thing in the world that hunter likes to hear from another hunter is ” I’ve never wounded a deer.” One thing that is certain about the hunting community is that its full of arrogant, prideful, hypocritical liars. Its a terrible feeling in the world to wound a deer and not find it, there are many hunters that have been there. Be an encouragement to people! Tell them your bad stories, don’t act like your a perfect hunter because your not. This is a very light illustration compared to more serious things. Don’t ever have an “I told you so” type attitude. People go through very difficult times! Sometimes spiritual, sometimes emotional, sometimes physical! The one thing they need more than anything is encouragement and love. Job feels like he’s ready to die and his three friends are trying to tell him about sin in his life, but God said he was a perfect man, meaning he walked with God. Whether a trial God is allowing in someone’s life or even chastisement, try to help them! That’s what they need more than anything! The Golden Rule is something everyone learns when their young, but the Golden Rule is just a man made term, treating others how you want to be treated actually came from the perfect inspired Word of God. Matthew 7:12 “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” The law(Word of God) is what determines good vs bad, right vs wrong, righteousness vs unrighteous. Sin starts in the heart, we all need to be careful about how we think and even treat others when God allows difficult times in their lives! What kind of comforter are you? What would others say about you? Be an encouragement!

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”

Isaiah 28:14-17

“14. Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. 15. Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: 16. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. 17. Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.”

What is the foundation of your life? Is it family? Friends? Materialism? Hunting or Fishing? In this context of scripture we see that the rulers of Jerusalem(Vs 14) are misleading the nation. They are trusting in their ways rather than the ways of God. Vs 16 is the key to today’s devotion. At this point in time this is a prophecy of the One who will come in the future. A true stone, or better yet, our Rock! Notice how vs 16 says “a sure foundation”. This is a prophecy of Jesus Christ! He is the only one that can guide us through life! He is the only one that can save us. Be careful of who you follow. These rulers of Jerusalem have brought a curse upon their own heads because they were chosing man’s ways, rather than God. Psalm 118:8 “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” Have you ever built your foundation upon the True Corner Stone? The Bible tells us not just here, but many other places in the Bible that WE MUST BELIEVE! “…..he that believeth shall not make haste.” When we look at vs 17 of the main context we can see that judgement is ahead, but “he that believeth” has nothing to worry about. Romans 10:11 “For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” What is your foundation? Who is you foundation? Its unfortunate that many sportsman go through life with religion, or even without religion, thinking that creation is the path to a relationship with God. The only way to have a true relationship with God is making Jesus Christ your sure foundation. Its not about religion, but is about a relationship. You could kill the biggest buck in the world and still die and go to hell. We live in a world today where people refuse to hear the truth! John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” So here is the truth, if you have built your foundation in anyone or anything other than Jesus Christ, the Bible says, you are bound for hell. The Bible also tells us that hell is real. Luke 16:22-23 “….the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments,…….” If man could make it to heaven and have victory in this life their own way, that would mean Jesus Christ died for no reason. The Bible says Jesus Christ is God, but you have to believe that! Remember, “Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” Have you made Jesus Christ your foundation? You can make that decision at this very moment! Acts 4:11-12 “This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Romans makes it very clear to us that accepting Jesus Christ is a decision that must me made in the heart; Romans 10:9-10 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him(Jesus Christ) from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” If you have made hunting, your family, your house, or even a false religion your foundation, you have been greatly deceived. Eternal Salvation is found only in Jesus Christ and we encourage you to make Him your “sure foundation” today! In your own words, pray to the Lord and confess to Him that you are a sinner, that you believe Jesus Christ is God, and you believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, but it must be with all your heart! The Bible says when you believe, you shall be saved. Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” The choice is yours! Only you can make that decision! Is Jesus Christ your precious corner stone? If He is not, get that settled today!

Genesis 7:4-5

“4.For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. 5.And Noah did according unto all that the Lord commanded him.”

There has been a recent social media post of two elephants with grumpy faces standing side by side after stepping off what looks to be the ark. In the background, there are many paired animals walking or running from the ramp of the door. There is a little white bubble above one elephant that appears to be speaking, and it says; “Some cruise! It rained for the entire trip!” Its sad to see the amount of Christians that find this humorous. What appears to be just a cartoon comic, is nothing more than a mockery of God’s Perfect Holy Word! In this innocent little comic we find nothing more than deception and the darkness of man’s heart. The picture shows that the ark was sitting on the side of a sandy beach, but the Bible says the ark came to rest in the mountains of Ararat. That may be simple, but yet its deceptive. Secondly the elephant says that it rained the entire trip, but the Bible says it actually rained for 40 days and 40 nights. David Sorensen’s commentary states that all of Noah’s family and all the animals would have been in the ark for around 370 days. That is a lot longer than 40. For someone who knows the Bible they would quickly say to themselves “that’s not exactly accurate”, but there are many lost souls that can easily be deceived about God’s love and mercy. The most disturbing part of this whole comic is the grump and gloom on the faces of the two elephants. They were dissatisfied with the trip! What a mockery to God’s love. Galatians 6:7 ” Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” What kind of Christian are you? Is your glass half full or half empty? Many live their lives with the attitude of, its always half empty. Philippians 2:14-15 “Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;” Are you saved? You have everything to be thankful for! The ark was salvation, not just to the living animals, but also to Noah and all his family. Its easy to overlook Genesis 7:1 but look at it: “And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark:…..” So lets say you just got your mount back from the taxidermist, your friends are excited to see your newly preserved trophy and in a short time the door bell rings. Your two best friends are now standing at the door waiting for you to invite them into your home to see this big monster. As you open the door, you quickly say to them “Come on in.” That would mean you are inviting them into a place your are already occupying. Look at 7:1 again “And the LORD said……Come thou…” Noah and his family was saved from God’s wrath! The entire time they were in the ark they were in the presence of God because God was already in the ark! So why are the elephants so sad faced? That is how the devil wants us to live, caught up in the 40 days of rain, rather than having joy in our salvation. For a hunter, we see a second great thing at the departure of the ark; Genesis 9:2-3 “And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all fishes of the sea; into your hands are they delivered. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.” The wild animal was created and hunting began! The elephant comic paints a good picture of how many Christians respond to the great things God has done for them! Be thankful! Praise God for how good He has been to you. He suffered and died to set us free from this sin cursed world. Do we really have anything to be grumpy about?

Philippians 2:14-15

Matthew 1:23

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”

At 12 years old I still remember my first close bow encounter with a whitetail very well. As I sat in the stand that evening I had a small 6 point step out of the cornfield into a little weeded area that bordered the corner of the hardwoods I was sitting in. It was my first real experience of buck fever and I don’t think I could have made a good shot even if he would have presented an opportunity. All night long I would grunt at this buck and his curiosity would draw him to 20 yards, but he would never jump the fence. As the night faded away, I found myself sitting in the dark and the only thing that ran through my mind is that this deer is now going to jump the fence and attack me as I adventure back to grandma’s house in the dark. With very little light left, I began waving my hands and yelling so the deer would run off before I got to the bottom of my ladder. My dad picked me up on his way home from work that evening and was very disappointed at my actions because we were planning to hunt there again the next morning. At 12 years old there was a lot I didn’t understand about whitetails. I didn’t realize that they would intentionally avoid that specific area for days, weeks, or even months due to the danger that was presented that night. Over the years I have come to learn a lot about whitetail hunting and the decision I made that night was a terrible one. What does it take to become a better hunter? That’s an easy answer: Time! The more time you spend in the stand, the more time you read, and the more time you listen to others can change your hunting success drastically. There are many believers today that accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour, but as they grow older they are never successful in their walk with Christ because they refuse to spend time learning who Jesus Christ is. There are many people that have been saved for years, but when they have conversation with a muslim, jehovah witness, or even a catholic they don’t know how to defend their faith because they spend no time studying God’s Word. Who is Jesus Christ? Some say that he was just a prophet, some say that he was just a son of God, but what does the Bible say? If someone told you that Jesus Christ was/is not God, could you defend that with scriptures? The great news about this truth is that its all over the Bible. Before we read this verse in Matthew we can see a great prophecy hundreds of years before Christ is even born; Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the LORD himself shall give you a sign; Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Jesus Christ was a man, but the Bible says He was God in the flesh. Remember, Emmanuel(according to Matthew) means “God with us.” We can even go a little further and see what John had to say: I John 5:7 “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” The Word is the Son of God who is Jesus Christ. Some want to say that these three agree in one, but the Bible says they “are one.” You might say, “explain that one.” There are some things in the Bible we wont be able to fully understand until we get to heaven, this is one of them, but we must believe it by faith. John 1:1 tells us again that God and Jesus are the same: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Word is Jesus Christ and John 1:14 shows us that clearly: “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. In John 20:28 we can see Thomas identifying with Jesus who He truly was: “And Thomas answered and said unto him, my Lord and my God.” Time is so valuable to a Christian! Are you spending time studying the Bible? Do you know how to defend against the false teachers? The Bible says that Emmanuel means “God with us.” If you have a desire to see others saved you will encounter this in your witness maybe sooner than later. What are you going to say when someone tells you that Jesus Christ is not God? Are you prepared? Have you been spending your time studying the Word? Its not about what I think or what you think or what man thinks! Its about what the Bible says! Do you feel like you are becoming a successful Christian? How many people have you won to Christ lately or even just witnessed to them? I Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:”

Nahum 1:12-13

“12. Thus saith the LORD; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more. 13. For now will I break off his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder.”

The beginning of the chapter starts out with the burden of Nineveh. This is many years after the days of Jonah. Nineveh is the capitol of Assyria. The king of Assyria is greatly feared because of his power and destruction of many other nations. The 10 northern tribes of Israel have been judged by God through the Assyrian invasion, but at this passage of scripture we see God putting his hand of protection upon Judah and Jerusalem. The end of Verse 12 is the focus on today’s devotion; “Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.” Its very hard to avoid affliction. There are so many great men of the faith that had great victories in the Lord, but not before affliction. Affliction is defined as: to give to the body or mind pain which is continued or of some permanence; to grieve, or distress. Do you feel like you’ve had affliction in your life lately? Do you feel like God is putting you to the test? God has allowed some affliction to Judah, but God wasn’t going to destroy them. Isaiah 36:1 “Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.” God allowed affliction for a time, but in verse 12 He said He would allow it no more. Do you really trust God for the difficulties in life? God wants you to trust Him. It may be that He is allowing affliction in your life so you will have a greater faith! To an avid hunter affliction might be that you haven’t killed a deer in a year or two. That could be considered light affliction, but God may be trying to get your attention and help you realize your focus needs to be on Jesus Christ rather than the tree stand. Its not wrong to hunt, but its important to have proper balance. Proverbs 11:1 “A FALSE balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.” On a different note, maybe your affliction is through seeing your family saved or being persecuted in the work place. If you feel affliction in your life right now, just keep holding onto Jesus, its part of the Christian walk. The odds for king Hezekiah did not look good from a human standpoint, but God said don’t worry, the affliction is over, Assyria will not hurt you and they will return to their land in the same direction that they came. God wanted king Hezekiah(king of Judah) to simply trust His Word. King Hezekiah stood his ground and God delivered him mightily. God sent an angel into the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 soldiers. King Sennacherib of Nineveh(Assyrian Capitol) returned to his land and was killed by the sword just as God had spoken. God is faithful! Thank Him for your affliction. He wants you to trust Him! Its important to have a clean heart with God, sometimes the affliction is a chastisement, but many times its just God testing your faith so He can do great things through you! Don’t bail out, stay faithful! We would encourage you to read the following scriptures as part of this devotion: Nahum 1, Isaiah 36-37, II Kings 18-19. This will help you get a full understanding of this great deliverance!

Daniel 6:16

“Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.”

The famous story of Daniel and the lions den. At this verse in the scripture, Daniel has been found guilty of obeying God rather than men. Fear causes a great destruction in the life of every believer. What is it that keeps you from serving God? Is it your friends? Your boss? Family? Deer season? God is faithful, and He will always deliver! There were some very evil rulers that hated the fact that Daniel was a man of God. When any believer begins to walk with God, you will soon realize that people will hate you without a cause. The evil rulers made the king believe he was higher than all and that no person could ask of anything from God or any man for thirty days. Not realizing that these men were out to destroy Daniel, the king signs the petition. These evil rulers quickly find Daniel praying to the God of heaven regardless of the petition and now he is being cast into the den of lions. King Darius is grieved at what he has done. He knew there was something special about Daniel! Daniel made it clear to everyone that no matter what happens, he will always serve God. Toward the end of this verse we find some very powerful words: “Thy God whom thou servest continually” and also “he will deliver thee.” What do people see in your life? Do they know you love Jesus Christ? As the world falls away from truth it is so sad to see believers in the condition their in! Loving God continually is the only way you we see impossible things done. Our God is a God of deliverance, but many believers don’t ever see His greatness because they bow out at the first sign of trouble. You cant serve God when you sit amongst the dirty jokes or even hang out at your buddy’s that’s always smoking and drinking. God still wants you to be a witness to the people around you, but its impossible to please God when you become part of the lost crowd, rather than walking with Him. Hunting or fishing on Sunday Morning is not a good way to serve God continually either. God has given us six other days to enjoy His wonderful creation; why is it always on Sunday too? There is one thing that is certain, life is tough and full of destruction. You may not be experiencing it now, but know that it will happen throughout your life. When it happens, will God deliver you? Daniel chose to serve God regardless of the outcome and guess what happened; He sat in a den of lions all night and never saw harm. God hasn’t changed, He is still the same God and He will still deliver you from the worry’s and struggles of life. God led the children of Israel across the Red Sea on dry land, He caused the walls of Jericho to fall down before the eyes of His people, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were never hurt in the fiery furnace, and He closed the mouths of the lions because He is a faithful loving God, full of deliverance. Do you trust Him? Do you believe that He is able? Matthew 22:37 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” The scriptures prove that Daniel loved the Lord with all that he had, in fact, we are still reading about him today. What are people going to remember about you? Are you serving the Lord continually? Don’t be that Christian that never saw a Red Sea crossing or the mouth of lions closed during your lifetime. God is faithful and He is a God of deliverance! All those evil rulers were devoured by the lions after Daniels deliverance! Stop worrying about bad things happening in your life and just trust God with a continual service!
